Green Dot on a Smartphone: When to Sound the Alarm and When It’s Normal

A small green dot that appears at the top of your iPhone or Android screen is not just a decorative element, but a security feature that indicates camera or microphone activity. While it does not by itself mean your device has been hacked, seeing this indicator without an obvious reason is a signal you should not ignore.

This privacy feature was introduced by Apple (starting with iOS 14) and Google (with Android 12) in response to discovered cases where some apps, even those that perform simple functions such as a flashlight, were secretly collecting and selling users’ personal data. Color indicators have become an essential part of operating systems so users can track in real time which apps are accessing sensitive data.

When is the green dot a cause for concern?

The appearance of the green dot is completely normal when you are actively using the camera: during video calls, taking photos, recording video, or using apps that inherently require camera access. However, if the indicator lights up suddenly when you have not launched any apps that use the camera or microphone, it may indicate that an app is running in the background and recording information. In the rarest cases, this can be a sign of malware.

What to do if the green dot appears for no reason

If you notice a green dot when, as far as you know, no app should be using it, you should take certain steps to check and protect your device:

• Check the status bar: Swipe down from the top of the screen. The status bar should show the name of the app currently using the camera or microphone.
• Close suspicious apps: If you find an app that looks suspicious, close it. On iPhone, this is done through the app switcher, and on Android through the multitasking menu.
• Review app permissions: Revoke camera and microphone permissions for apps you do not trust or that do not need this access. On iPhone, you can do this in “Settings” → “Privacy & Security”. On Android, the path may differ, but it is usually “Settings” → “Security & Privacy” → “Permission Manager” or a similar item.
• Scan for malware: If your smartphone is behaving unusually, use a reliable antivirus scanner to detect and remove any malicious software.
• Factory reset: As a last resort, if none of the other measures help, back up your data and perform a factory reset of the device. This is the most decisive step to help get rid of potential threats.
