Ukrainian defense startup Ratel Robotics becomes part of the American-Ukrainian defense ecosystem of Swarmer

American-Ukrainian company Swarmer, which specializes in defense technologies, has taken a major step toward expanding its manufacturing capabilities and technology portfolio by signing an agreement to acquire Ukrainian producer of ground-based unmanned systems Ratel Robotics. The deal, whose potential value could reach $224 million if all agreed conditions are met, sends a strong signal of growing attention from international investors and defense companies to Ukrainian military developments that have proven their effectiveness in real combat conditions.

The Wall Street Journal has already described this transaction as one of the largest in the field of modern defense technologies. It comes amid rising interest from American companies in Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex, which has become a testing ground for innovative solutions.

Synergy for the global market

According to Swarmer’s U.S. CEO Alex Fink, the deal gives Ukrainian developers, including Ratel Robotics, an opportunity to enter the global market. Fink stressed that many Ukrainian companies lack the resources and infrastructure to scale independently at an international level. That is why finding strategic partners able to provide the necessary support and access to new markets is becoming a key factor in their success.

Eric Prince, chairman of Swarmer’s board and known for his role in founding private military companies, said the company intends to continue actively pursuing acquisition opportunities and strategic partnerships with defense and security technology companies. Swarmer will pay particular attention to developments that have already been successfully tested on the battlefield. This points to a clear company strategy aimed at consolidating the most promising and battle-tested military technologies.

It is worth noting that Eric Prince and Swarmer already have experience working together. In August 2026, they founded Vectus Air Defense Systems, a company specializing in air defense services for governments and operators of critical infrastructure. Ratel Robotics became one of the founders of Vectus, receiving 20% of the shares in the newly created company. As part of the cooperation, Ratel Robotics will provide its advanced drone autonomous control technologies and take part in the development of systems to counter unmanned aerial vehicles.

Technological edge: what is behind the deal

Swarmer is the developer of innovative software that coordinates groups of drones during combat missions. The system makes it possible to determine the sequence of strikes, optimize resource use (for example, manage battery charge), and adapt to changing conditions such as loss of communication with individual drones. According to the company, its technologies have already been used in more than 100,000 combat missions in Ukraine since April 2024, confirming their high efficiency and reliability.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ratel Robotics was known as a manufacturer of equipment for street lighting. However, the company quickly adapted to the new reality and reoriented its production capabilities toward creating ground-based unmanned platforms. In the first four months of 2024, Ratel Robotics received orders amounting to approximately 37% of the budget of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense allocated for the purchase of unmanned ground vehicles. This indicates strong demand for the company’s products and its ability to respond quickly to the needs of the Ukrainian army. According to Ratel Robotics, its ground drones have taken part in 112,000 logistics and evacuation missions since the beginning of the year, highlighting their versatility and indispensable role on the battlefield.

This deal opens new horizons for both companies. Swarmer gains access to Ratel Robotics’ production capabilities and experience in building reliable ground-based unmanned systems, while Ratel Robotics will be able to use Swarmer’s global network, resources, and technological expertise to enter international markets. The synergy between the two companies has the potential to significantly strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and reinforce the position of Ukrainian military technologies on the global stage.

Interestingly, before this, in September 2026, Swarmer co-founder Serhii Kuprienko announced his resignation as global CEO. Despite this personnel change, the company’s strategic direction, focused on innovation and expansion, remains unchanged.

In addition, Swarmer’s cooperation with other Ukrainian companies, such as Molfar Intelligence, on the development of AI systems for drones demonstrates Swarmer’s commitment to building an integrated defense technology ecosystem in which artificial intelligence plays a key role. This integration makes it possible to create more powerful, autonomous, and effective solutions for the most complex tasks in modern warfare. The production of ground drones, as in the case of Ratel Robotics, is becoming an important element of this overall strategy, complementing the capabilities of aerial systems and providing a comprehensive approach to defense needs.
