China launches wind power plant: 131 turbines, 6.6 billion kWh a year

China launches a giant wind power plant: 131 turbines will generate more than 6.6 billion kWh of clean energy annually

China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) has announced the commissioning of the powerful offshore Fanshi wind power plant, located in Guangdong Province. This large-scale project, equipped with 131 wind turbines, will become one of the world’s largest in terms of the number of high-capacity units installed and will provide a clean energy source for a key region of the country.

The new wind power plant, located 81 kilometers from the coast, has the potential to generate more than 6.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This figure is equivalent to reducing emissions associated with burning approximately 1.92 million metric tons of coal, highlighting the project’s significant contribution to the decarbonization of China’s energy sector.

Innovative turbines and their potential

The heart of the Fanshi wind power plant is 33 ultra-large turbines, each with a capacity of 18 megawatts. The rotor diameter of these giants reaches 292 meters, and the area they sweep as they rotate is about 66,000 square meters — comparable to the size of nine standard football fields.

At full load, one rotation of the rotor of such an 18-megawatt turbine can produce approximately 43 kWh of electricity. According to CGN, that is enough to cover the needs of an average household for nine days. One such turbine can generate up to 56 million kilowatt-hours per year. The use of more powerful turbines made it possible to reduce the total number of required sites and foundations, as well as the scope of underwater cable-laying work.

China’s direction in renewable energy development

The launch of the Fanshi wind power plant is part of China’s broader strategy for developing renewable energy. According to the country’s National Energy Administration, as of the end of August, China’s total installed power generation capacity reached 4.10 billion kilowatts, up 11.1% compared with the previous year.

During the same period, installed wind power capacity grew by 19.6%, reaching 693 million kilowatts. According to CCTV News, China accounts for 78% of the world’s total newly connected offshore wind power capacity, underscoring its leadership in this sector.

The Fanshi project will supply electricity to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and contribute to the further expansion of large-scale wind farms across China.
