ATB Confirms Attempted Cyberattack: Ransom Demanded for Data
The ATB supermarket chain has confirmed an attempted cyberattack, reports Economic Pravda. The attackers demanded a ransom of $400,000 and gave just two hours to transfer it in cryptocurrency. According to a company representative, information about a data breach has not been confirmed, and ATB is urging people not to spread panic.
### What happened
On Monday, October 5, information appeared in Telegram channels about what was said to be a large-scale data breach of the ATB network. As evidence, archives were presented which, according to the attackers, contained complete information about customers, employees, suppliers, and orders. To prevent this data from being published, the hackers demanded $400,000 in USDT or Bitcoin, setting a strict deadline for the transfer of 2 hours.
Against the backdrop of these reports, the ATB website was operating intermittently, but as of 3:50 p.m., maintenance work was being carried out on it. Later, the site became available to users, allowing them to browse the product assortment.
### Company position
Serhii Demchenko, head of corporate communications at ATB, urged the public not to spread information he called “treason” before an official clarification is issued. “The relevant services and specialists are dealing with this issue. We will provide an official statement later,” Demchenko said.
ATB’s press service commented on the situation, saying: “We are not talking about a website hack, but we do confirm an attempted cyberattack.”
### Context of previous events
News of the cyberattack came amid other events involving the ATB chain. In particular, on September 28, Russian occupiers struck the company’s warehouses in Kyiv region. ATB confirmed the hit, but details were not disclosed for security reasons. As a result of the strike, according to media reports, some non-food items may have been missing from stores, and the selection of household chemicals was limited to basic items.
