AI scammers steal $108 million from Fideuram bank executive
Scammers tricked a bank executive out of $108 million using an AI deepfake
Italian private bank Fideuram suffered a multimillion-dollar loss because of a sophisticated cyberfraud scheme in which criminals used artificial intelligence to imitate the voices of top executives. The bank’s chairman, Paolo Molesini, fell victim to the scam, believing an AI-generated voice and transferring more than $100 million to the fraudsters’ accounts.
The incident, which took place earlier this year, raised concerns about the security of banking operations in the age of artificial intelligence. According to Reuters, the scammers acted according to a carefully planned scheme, using the latest technology to achieve their goal.
How the fraud unfolded
It all began with a WhatsApp message sent to Paolo Molesini’s phone. The sender supposedly was the CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo, Carlo Messina, whose group includes Fideuram. The message asked Molesini to help with an urgent foreign transaction.
Soon after, the Fideuram executive received a call from a representative of a large law firm. This is where the criminals deployed their key weapon: a voice deepfake generated by artificial intelligence. AI replicated the voice of a real senior lawyer, convincing Molesini that the request was legitimate. Framed as an urgent matter, Molesini ordered $108 million to be transferred to a number of overseas accounts, including in China and Hong Kong.
Consequences and attempts to recover the funds
After the transfers were made, Fideuram noticed suspicious transactions. The financial institution immediately began working with local authorities and banks in Italy, Portugal, and China. Thanks to the joint effort, more than $60 million was recovered. However, the rest of the money was laundered by the scammers through a complex network of offshore accounts.
Paolo Molesini has already resigned as chairman. Fideuram continues to make efforts to recover the stolen money. The Milan prosecutor’s office is actively investigating the case and trying to identify the criminals. Preliminary information suggests that one suspect may be living outside the European Union.
This incident clearly shows how artificial intelligence technologies can be used for criminal purposes, creating new challenges for the security systems of financial institutions.
