Sony adds payment terminals to PlayStation controllers
Sony may build contactless payment terminals into PlayStation controllers
Sony is considering integrating contactless payment terminals directly into PlayStation controllers. According to a patent filed by the company, this move could significantly simplify the process of buying games and other content within the PlayStation ecosystem.
Cashless payments through the gamepad: how it would work
The new system, described in the patent titled “Information Transmission Using Game Controller,” would allow users to make payments simply by tapping a bank card or smartphone against the controller. The use of PlayStation gift cards is also planned.
The patent application was filed back in March 2025, but the information only became public recently, sparking lively discussion among gamers and industry publications. Dexerto was among the first outlets to notice the potential innovation.
The patent includes schematic illustrations showing possible use cases. One image shows a TV screen asking whether the user wants to buy a game, alongside a PS5 DualSense controller and a smartphone. Another image illustrates receiving a gift card. This suggests a possible simplification of the process of topping up a PlayStation Store balance, which currently requires more complicated steps.
New possibilities for gamers
According to the patent, the system could offer users the option to purchase the full version of a game immediately after trying a demo, or while taking part in gaming events. Payments in such cases are also expected to be made through the controller. However, it remains unclear whether additional authorization through the player’s account will be required to confirm the purchase.
To ensure the payment system works, NFC and Bluetooth technologies are planned. This may indicate potential integration with the PlayStation mobile app on users’ smartphones.
At this stage, it is only a patent, and there is no guarantee that Sony will bring this development to market. However, the idea of integrating payment terminals into controllers seems like a logical step toward maximum convenience for gamers.
