A breakthrough in cooling: modder achieves a record temperature drop on the RTX 2060

An incredible technical feat was demonstrated by an enthusiast known as TrashBench, who successfully implemented an experimental direct water-cooling system for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card. The goal of this daring project was to radically reduce the operating temperature of the GPU, which before the modification reached 70°C under standard operating conditions. After the innovative solution was put into practice, the GPU temperature dropped to an impressive 28°C, showing the exceptional efficiency of the system he developed.

The story of this project did not begin with the RTX 2060. TrashBench first decided to test his innovative design on a less sensitive graphics card — an RTX 3060 — which, however, was already out of commission. This choice was driven by the high level of risk associated with direct contact between liquid and the silicon chip and other components of the printed circuit board. A potential leak could have caused irreversible damage to the entire graphics card. A 3D-printed plastic block was used to create the cooling unit. After that, to provide additional sealing and insulation, a layer of epoxy resin was applied to the substrate around the GPU chip. However, the first attempts were not entirely successful: water seeped even through the plastic structure, forcing the modder to make adjustments and improve the design. After successfully passing the leak test on the RTX 3060, TrashBench continued his experiments by applying the same configuration to a GeForce GTX 980 graphics card. This modification was also successful, giving him more confidence before the next stage.

Direct water cooling: a challenge for the RTX 2060

The final stage of this ambitious project was the GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card. This was the model on which the modder aimed to achieve maximum efficiency. The standard cooling system for this model, according to tests in the Unigine Heaven synthetic benchmark, maintained an operating temperature of around 70°C. TrashBench built a custom plastic block designed for direct contact with the RTX 2060 GPU. An important detail was the secure mounting of the system’s tubing, as well as a setup in which the pump drew water directly from the reservoir, ensuring uninterrupted flow through the cooling loop. This approach, in which water circulates directly over the silicon chip, made it possible to achieve a phenomenal result — lowering the temperature from 70°C to 28°C. This is a significant improvement that could substantially affect the graphics card’s longevity and its performance under heavy loads, since high temperatures are one of the main enemies of computer components.

For comparison, before moving to the extreme direct-contact method, the modder carried out an experiment by connecting a standard 360 mm liquid-cooling system to the GPU. Even in this more traditional enthusiast configuration, it was possible to achieve a significant temperature reduction — to about 36°C. This confirms the effectiveness of liquid cooling as such, but direct contact with the chip produced even better results. This experiment with liquid cooling for the Intel Core i5 7600K processor showed that while the liquid-cooling system was effective, it could not match the efficiency of direct water cooling in the context of this experiment, although its results may be even more impressive. It is important to emphasize that, despite the striking numbers, such modifications are not recommended unless you have the proper technical knowledge and experience. Careless actions can cause irreparable damage to your hardware. The risk of leaks, short circuits, or mechanical damage when working with liquids and electronics is extremely high.
